In 1941, the 2/22nd Battalion was deployed to Rabaul on the island of New Britain (now part of Papua New Guinea) as part of Lark Force, tasked with defending the area against Japanese forces. On 23 January 1942, Japanese forces invaded Rabaul, overwhelming the Australian defenders. Many members of Lark Force were killed or captured; some attempted to escape.memorial.org.auPrivate White died on 22 February 1942 while at sea en route to Port Moresby.
