Rabaul Under Fire: WWII Bombing Campaign (1943–1945)
During World War II, Rabaul became a major Japanese military base and was heavily bombed by Allied forces between 1943 and 1945. The relentless aerial bombardments aimed to neutralize Japanese defenses, turning the once-thriving town into a devastated war zone.

Queen of the South Seas: The Legacy of Emma Coe
Emma Eliza Coe (26 September 1850 – 21 July 1913), widely known as “Queen Emma,” was a formidable businesswoman, plantation owner, and influential figure in the South Pacific during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Her life journey spanned Samoa, Australia, Papua New Guinea, and Europe, reflecting a remarkable blend of cultural heritage, entrepreneurial spirit, and resilience.

William Dampier first sailed into the Bismarck Archipelago in 1699 aboard HMS Roebuck during his exploration of the region. He named the island of New Britain as Nova Britannia.

Private James Edwin White (Service Number: VX30203) served in the Australian Army during World War II as a member of the 2/22nd Australian Infantry Battalion. In 1941, the 2/22nd Battalion was deployed to Rabaul on the island of New Britain (now part of Papua New Guinea) as part of Lark Force, tasked with defending the area against Japanese forces. On 23 January 1942, Japanese forces invaded Rabaul, overwhelming the Australian defenders. Many members of Lark Force were killed or captured; some attempted to escape.memorial.org.au
